Ravenna - The City of Mosaic

In its 2000 year history, Ravenna was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire and the center of Byzantine civilization.

Located on the Adriatic midway between Venice and Florence, Ravenna (pop. 136 000) is best known for the wonderful mosaic decoration of its churches and tombs relics from its Byzantine past.

Every year more than 3 million people visit Ravenna because of its unique artistic heritage, that has been recognised by UNESCO. Eight monuments built over a period of 1500 years have been added to the World Heritage List.

But of course it is not just mosaics that bring you here. Ravenna is the heart of Emilia Romagna, a region known also for its great food and its great music.

The city is very charming, there are many good restaurants and at night the city is very lively. Close to Ravenna you will also find good beaches.

Accommodations in town start from 14 Euro per night.

Please feel free to ask more info to our teachers.

Bologna is really the best, we recommend it. A special bus connects the airport with the train station every 15 minutes (the trip takes 15 mins - ticket on board 4.50 euros). Then, you can easily get Ravenna by train in approx 1 hour.

Many international companies(*) fly from the United States to Bologna, with just one intermediate stop (usually London, Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Frankfurt, Munich, Barcellona or Paris).

(*) American Airlines, NWA, Delta, KLM, Continental, Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, SAS, Iberia, Alitalia and many others.

As second best option, you can fly to Florence or Venice, that are 2-3 hours by train to Ravenna.

From Germany

Recently, many companies started low-cost flights from Germany to Bologna and/or Forli (Forli is a little airport, just a few kilometers from Ravenna).

This is the list of the companies:

Sometimes there are very interesting offers of LUFTHANSA as well.

The low cost company Ryanair scheduled daily flights from London Stansted to Forli (FRL) and Bologna (BLQ)

Forli (international code: FRL) is a little airport, just 16 miles from Ravenna.

A special bus connects the airport with Ravenna, the single ticket costs 7 Euros.
